Tailbacks as lorries and car crash on A46 in Leicestershire
Traffic came to a standstill yesterday morning after two lorries and a car were involved in a collision on the A46 ring road.
The crash happened at 9.40am as a car was joining the busy road, heading northbound towards the Hobby Horse island.

Both lorries were travelling along the dual carriageway in the same direction.
One motorist who witnessed the crash said: "The slip road from Wanlip is short and vehicles often struggle to build up enough speed to join the traffic on the A46, which is travelling at 50mph to 60mph.

"I heard the impact as a bulk tipper lorry crashed into the back of another lorry, which was braking to avoid a collision with a car.
"The driver of the bulk carrier had to climb out through the windscreen of his vehicle. I was surprised he wasn't injured but he was able to walk around."
No-one was injured, but the collision caused long tailbacks on the northbound carriageway while the vehicles and debris were removed from the road.

“C_G_Lee - the accident wasn't on the roundabout but at the slip road joining the A46 at Wanlip. The slip road is not long enough for drivers to match their speed before joining the carriageway. The fact that many drivers travel along that stretch at way over the speed limit doesn't help.
Good that no-one was injured or worse still, killed.”

“Sorry, I meant accelerate down the slip road at 70.”

“C_G_Lee, I would suggest (again knowing it well) that the people causing the problems and often the near/actual crashes are those who seem to think that stretch of road has had the speed limit increased to 100mph for drivers of "Executive Cars" only and who are also so important that they can cut in at the last moment (into a gap that doesn't actually exist) rather than slow down and filter like all the plebs have to...........”

“There would appear to be a problem with this roundabout as it seems to suffer rather more than its fair share of accidents. I use it regularly, so I understand it, but a stranger would, I think, have to treat it with the utmost respect as it is not straightforward by any means.
Perhaps the planners should take another look at it and consider whether it needs altering or maybe signing differently.”

“My own mother fails to understand how to use slip roads correctly. I remember her shrieking once as I accelerated to road speed (70mph) down the dual carriageway so I could join the traffic seamlessly on the dual carriageway. It turns out she trundles down and, if she can't see a gap, STOPS at the point the slip road joins the dual carriageway until she can see a gap. I was aghast and now refuse to get in the car with her until she takes a driving refresher.”
