More than 150 people took part in a protest against the Sri Lankan military's war against the Tamil Tigers.

People from the Tamil community living in Leicester assembled at the Clock Tower on Saturday to make their feelings know about the civil war.

There has been fighting for much of the past two decades between the government and Tamil Tiger rebels who want an independent homeland in the north and east of the island.

Sachi Manr, 29, of Rushey Mead, was among the protesters. He said: "This has been going on for years, but in the past few months, since a ceasefire was broken, there are more than 100 people dying every day.

"We want the British government to put pressure on the Sri Lankan government to stop the fighting.

"I have family in Sri Lanka and I do not know if they are alive or dead.

"I would urge everybody to write to their MP and the Prime Minister to ask them to help."

“There are definetly two sides to every story but lets not be naive, there are two sides to every genocide, the oppressors side and the defendants side.”
