Sir Terry Wogan was the guest of honour at the University of Leicester's annual Alumni Dinner.

The TV and radio star gave a speech to more than 170 guests, mostly former students of the university, as they dined at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, in Hyde Park, London.

Hosted by the vice-chancellor, Professor Sir Robert Burgess, the evening was an opportunity for graduates to meet old friends and enjoy a four-course meal with wine, music and dancing.

Sir Terry has been a regular guest of the University of Leicester for many years, holding his annual fans' convention at the university since 1984. In 2010, the university awarded him an honorary degree.

During the evening, the 2012 Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award was presented to Danielle Brown, who graduated with a law degree in 2010, in recognition of her achievements as an archer in Paralympic and able-bodied competitions.

Steve O'Connor, director of development at the university, said: "For someone so young, she has achieved a great deal and has become one of the world's best archers. To have accomplished this whilst achieving a first-class honours degree in law studying full-time is an incredible achievement."

The night raised more than £3,000 for the university's Cardiovascular Research Centre Appeal. A new centre due is to open this summer at Glenfield Hospital.

“I'm a grad too and I like the idea of Leicester alumni having a posh do in London. London's got quite a good record for the very best venues, plus there are more graduates living in London than Leicester. Plus it's quite prestigious to go up to our capital city. Plenty on in Leicester too - including the summer reunion and local meetings/lectures etc! The summer do was excellent last year, and looking forward to this year's already. And you're right, Wogan knows Leicester well now. I understand the TOGGs still meet at the halls in Oadby each year.”

“Why is the Leicester Alumni dinner in London? I keep getting invites for it which I may of thought of attending if it was in Leicester rather than London.

Also Terry know Leicester well as I believe the TOG's use to meet in Leicester when he worked on Radio 2!”
