Things to do in Leicestershire this weekend - March 16-18
There’s a definite theme running through our choice of what to do this weekend and mum’s the word. From owl watching to enjoying afternoon tea fit for a Queen there are some great ideas for things to do, make and buy for mum. So here’s our top 10 things to do in Leicester and Leicestershire this weekend (March 16, 17, 18)
1. STAGE: Saturday, March 17 – Billy Goats Gruff at Curve Theatre Leicester
Trip trap your way to Curve and venture into the magical world of puppets, live music, storytelling and singing at Curve. Suitable for three to six-year-olds, and presented by Garlic Theatre Company, this is the simple story of three hungry goats and a grumpy old troll, told with a gentle ecological message.
Little Curve shows are created for younger customers and their families. The show is on twice - at 11am and 1pm. Tickets are £5 on 0116 242 3595.
2 MOTHER’S DAY EVENT: Sunday, March 18 at St Martins House, Peacock Lane, Leicester.
Treat your mum to a Mother’s Day tea fit for a Queen in the wonderful setting of the Grand Hall, St Martins House Conference Centre. Follow in the footsteps of the royal visitors who were welcomed very recently to the centre. The tea is from 3pm to 5pm, and costs £12.50. 3 DANCE: Saturday, March 17 – Desi Masti at De Montfort Hall, Leicester.
Leicester’s Desi Masti dance company presents Dance of Olympia. Enjoy an evening of Bollywood and fusion dance in the spirit of the Olympic games. If you would like to take part in Dance of Olympia as a performer then please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
4. FAMILY: Sunday, March 18 – Owl encounter and mums go free! at Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre.
Bosworth Battlefield is hosting an owl encounter - an owl display with plenty of handling and flying opportunities. You can take the 2km guided walk exploring the Battle of Bosworth, the death of King Richard III and the unlikely victory of Henry Tudor. It's all free, if you’re a mum, and your child has purchased an exhibition ticket.

5. ART and CRAFT: Saturday and Sunday, March 17 & 18 – National Science and Engineering at Brocks Hill Country Park & Visitor Centre.
A weekend of science, engineering and creativity is on offer at the visitor centre in Washbrook Lane, Oadby. On Saturday it’s make a green flag day for the kids while on Sunday there’s a chance to make a mirror for Mum or the lady in your life. The centre also has a cafe, play area and country park. Entry and parking are both free.
6. MUSIC: Sunday, March 18 – Hollies at De Montfort Hall, Leicester.
You could present your mum with roses, tulips, daffs or daisies, this Mothering Sunday, but she’d much rather tickets to see the Hollies. From one classic, to another, 50 years of hits such as The Air That I Breathe, Bus Stop, Carrie Anne, Just One Look and He Ain’t Heavy, are sure to rock her special day.

7. FILM: Friday, Saturday & Sunday – Red Dog (PG) at Phoenix Square, Leicester.
Based on the Australian folk-tale of Red Dog - a stray that united a mining community - this is a moving, affectionate love-letter to the outback, put together with huge doses of humour and heart. As the loveable group of miners take Red Dog to their hearts. An enchanting film and fun too.
8. FAMILY: Saturday, 17 March – Plant a tree at Gorse Hill City Farm.
As part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee the city farm is planting 105 wild fruit trees. Come along and plant a tree then come and visit through the seasons and see how the tree grows and changes. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Bring your own spade and wear strong shoes or boots. Planting starts at 10.30am.
9. FAMILY: Saturday, March 17 – Daddy's Day at Abbey Pumping Station
Calling all dads and children, make a Mother’s Day card and decorate a paper basket to put that something special in for your mum. Follow the family trail around the museum. Refreshments available. Cost £2 for activities. Time: 11am to 3pm.
10. ARTS AND CRAFTS: Saturday, March 17 – Arts & Crafts for Mother’s Day at The Three Swans Hotel, High Street, Market Harborough.
An ideal place to bring Mum, or to find that special gift for her. Over 30 stalls including pottery, paintings, pet portraits, home furnishings, fabric bags, jewellery, textiles, fashions and accessories, wood, glass and many other unique, handcrafted items.
