Thomas Waldrom and Sam Harrison agree new Leicester Tigers contracts
Leicester Tigers have confirmed new deals for No.8 Thomas Waldrom and scrum-half Sam Harrison.
Waldrom has been a sensation since joining the club from the Canterbury Crusaders in the summer of 2010.
He has made 52 appearances in 18 months and become a cult hero among the fans for his incredible work-rate and 'Thomas the Tank Engine' try celebrations.
Harrison has had a breakthrough season and, with 15 appearances already, has made the most of the opportunities given to him.
The 21-year-old from Hinckley has relished the chance to represent his home town club and, as reported in the Mercury last month, has agreed to commit his future to the Tigers.
Kiwi-born Waldrom was the supporters' player of the year and newcomer of the year in 2010-11 before joining up with the England squad at the World Cup in New Zealand as an injury replacement.
Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill said the 17-stone ball-carrier had fitted in well.
"We knew he was a very good player when we first brought him to the club and he has developed well in his time with us," said Cockerill.
"He brings some different qualities to the back-row combinations in the squad, and we think he will continue to get better and better working within the Tigers environment.
"We're looking forward to seeing him continue to play an important role within the squad and I'm delighted he has agreed to stay."
Waldrom says his game has developed at Welford Road.
"I have a lot to thank the club for because I would not have got where I am now without Leicester Tigers," he said.
"Everyone at the club has helped me and my family settle in the area, and the supporters have been great to me."
Harrison, who came through the Tigers Academy after playing his early rugby with John Cleveland College and Hinckley, said: "Tigers are the club I always wanted to play for and it's a privilege being able to train and play alongside so many top players.
"When I came here, I knew all about the players who have worn the Tigers shirt before me and the standards that are expected when I wear the shirt.
"I've particularly enjoyed having a run of games this season because that helps your confidence and your game."
Capped at Under-20 level by England, Harrison has been a regular in the match-day squad this season.
Cockerill said Harrison's game had developed nicely.
He added: "Sam is a good, young English talent who has learned his trade along the way.
"He's had as much game-time this season as many of our senior players, he is developing as a player all the time and we're delighted that he wants to stay."
Cockerill added: "He is a very good young player in a very competitive position, and he has put his hand up in terms of selection with his consistent form this season."
