Thousands of visitors are expected to flock to a three-day celebration of Asian culture this weekend.

An estimated 7,000 people are expected to sample south Asian food, music, dance and the arts at the Parklands leisure centre, in Oadby, between Friday to Sunday.

Organisers said the event was aimed at promoting 5,000 years of Asian civilization, and will "instil south Asians with a sense of pride for their rich heritage".

Mandeep Nandra, who is co-ordinating marketing for the show, said: "It is a family, fun-filled event with all types of Asian cuisine from Leicestershire's best restaurants.

"Practically everyone who is involved will be from Leicestershire.

"We also have a fantastic catwalk show lined up which is being choreographed by one of the best Asian fashion choreographers in London."

A BBC Asian Network stage will showcase music and dance acts over the three days, including rapper AG Dolla and Bollywood star Navin Kundra.

Leicester East MP Keith Vaz will open the event.

He said: "I am proud to be able to lend my support to such a wonderful event.

"I hope all residents make their way down to the venue for what will be a fun-filled day."

He said the carnival would provide the perfect setting for Leicestershire's many south Asian residents to celebrate and share their culture, traditions and food.

Youngsters will be entertained at a "kids korner" featuring face-painting and a bouncy castle.

Chefs from restaurants around the county will show off their culinary talents at the food court.

Bridal fashion, jewellery and accessories will be on sale at the bargain bazaar.

There will be health information from the British Heart Foundation in a variety of languages.

Organisers hope people from all over the UK will visit the event, which is free to attend.

It runs from 11am to 7pm on Friday and Saturday, and 11am to 6pm on Sunday.

Visitors should park at Oadby Racecourse, where a free shuttle bus will transport them to and from the venue. There is no parking near the leisure centre.
