What on earth are the city council and De Montfort University doing to Leicester's architectural heritage?

The only trouble is that time is running out for the beautiful Bowstring Bridge as the council contractors are working on demolishing it as we speak.

It is unbelievable, in the first place, that the city council and DMU want to demolish the beautiful structure, which could be used in a fantastic future design for the West End of Leicester.

The council will also not stop work on the demolition, while Leicester Civic Society awaits its appeal against the English Heritage decision not to list the Bowstring Bridge. Surely there is no reason why the city council cannot at least halt the work while until this appeal is heard.

The council contractors with their heavy machinery have already proved that the council report from 2005 stating the bridge can only hold its own weight was flawed and DMU has not yet got planning permission for its swimming pool.

Come on, what is going on here? What is the council's rush to pull the bridge down? People of Leicester, the campaigners need any help you can give them to stop this destruction of a part of Leicester's heritage. There is something really wrong going on here.

P Moody, Narborough.

“It seems like the bridge and pub never had a chance. If there is anybody who knows of something that can be done to halt this wanton destruction of Leicester's West End then please do it now. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE.”

“What LCC and DMU are doing is disgusting, first the bridge, and now such short notice on the pub closure. The people of Leicester don't have a voice. The loss of the bridge and now imminently the Pump and Tap is unthinkable. The pub is such a unique and friendly place to meet up with friends.”

“There is now, also, the unexpected notice given on the Pump and Tap pub to close on 22nd November, which adds to the urgency to save the bridge, to save the heritage of Leicester's West End.”
