Former Leicestershire County Council deputy leader David Sprason has defected from the Conservative Party and joined UKIP.

Coun Sprason has become the county’s first UKIP councillor and has announced he intends to defend his Markfield, Desford and Thornton seat in May’s election.

He was sacked by the party in January for giving a frank interview to the Leicester Mercury about his use of a council computer to watch a pornographic film in 2007.

He told the Mercury today: “I have always tried to open and honest and grown up about things. The Tories at County Hall didn’t like that and they got rid of me.

“Recently I have been getting more frustrated both locally and nationally by the Conservatives.

“It has become increasingly apparent to me over recent months that a tired, old Conservative Party, which I’ve spent so many years defending, is failing to deliver for the people of Leicestershire.

“The more I speak to residents of my division, the more I realise that there is only one political party which now truly represents their views and aspirations, and that party is UKIP.

“UKIP believe in giving real democracy back to the voters whilst fighting to reduce Council Tax.

“UKIP are the only party who are truly opposed to HS2 and are fighting nationwide against the proliferation of Wind Turbines.”

Councillor Sprason was welcomed into UKIP by party leader Nigel Farage, and by East Midlands MEP Roger Helmer who abandoned the Conservative Party to join UKIP just over a year ago.

Mr Helmer said “I’m delighted to welcome Councillor Sprason and look forward to working with him in the coming months as we make every effort to ensure that after May, we have more than just one UKIP County Councillor in Leicestershire.”

“David needs to learn, in days like today you can't just go saying and publishing information like that! Does he have no privacy or standards!! Then to defect to a party so quickly I feel it shows just how loyal he is.. Jokes! Vote no to sprason and ukip!”

“If anyone doesn't think UKIP is a joke please go and read their Transport policy (for starters). For from being libertarian, Nick, they want to tell railway companies what colour their trains should be, cyclists to dismount before roundabouts, and stop people getting married because they're the same sex.

In one sentence they say there is too much signage on the roads, in the next they say they want variable speed limits wherever possible. Interesting to see how they do that without a sign...

In 2010 they were all for High Speed Rail (in fact they planned three tracks - paid for God only knows), of course a soon as they saw they could get some votes out if it they abandoned that (without explanation, and it' still on their policy documents) and said they were the only party to oppose HS rail!

They claim to be outside the political mainstream but in fact they're the worst type of politician. Their MEPs taking millions of pounds in expenses while hardly attending parliament. And when they do it is merely to make insulting remarks bereft of actual constructive criticism. Farage is very good at the soundbite and at winding up the tories but in practical terms he is useless. Another quick example - UKIP and Farage loudly trumpted their support of getting rid of certain fishing policies and supporting UK fisheries. On the day of the vote Fargae didn't bother turning up and the rest of motley crew abstained! The way every tory who thinks their days are numbered (as a Tory) is jumping ship does not suggest anything other than a desperate attempt to keep their noses in the trough.”

At the moment I do not see to many laughing at the other bunch that are taking this country down. Any chance of change is worth a try. If the untried UKIP is a joke what do you class the other bunch of jokers as?? World class leaders. Labour and Conservatives Lib Dems, just who do you think got us into the mess this Country is in??”

“UKIP are a joke. Which means Parsons is ideally suited.

Problem is, as noted by so many here willing to consider them, the joke could be on us.”

The real worry is he believes this.”

“12 months ago the county council elections looked like there were going to be a total snoozefest.

But with Parsons effectively gone, Staffordshire based Richard Blunt, trying to get elected in Parsons' old seat, a question mark over Kershaw and now the Sprason & Fraser show in town, it sounds like May's elections are going to be very interesting!”

Just remember the old adage; no-one who never made a mistake never made anything!!”

“UKIP have got some good libertarian policies, and its Ron Paul inspired youth section, looks promising. Unlike the Tories, they present a real alternative to New Labour. The older members are a bit fixated on traditionalism, but nobody's perfect. Until we get a genuine 'hip' grassroots Tea Party style movement, it will have to do.”
