    “Exactly Neil 0123.
I said this time and again when this scheme is proposed and then announced. Anyone that knows the national network will know that were the are OLE is installed, reliability falls off massively. Modern multi engine diesels don't generally fail completely and even then they can be moved but the rest of the trains stopped still have power and passengers are kept warm with working toilets. Once the electric power is shut off, you don't have toilets heating, or aircon in summer and forget opening doors and opening windows don't exist on modern stock.
It is possible to improve reliability of OLE but it requires a lot more money than the infrastructure can support so the trade off is that any weather incidents such as wind, snow of even heat waves not to mention vandals and derailments etc bring the lot down and it isn't a 5 second job to put back up. Rather thousands on a white elephant research into more efficient onboard power sources such as improving diesels and shutting down engines as required. At least then you have plenty of get out of jail backups to keep the services running”

“"Problems caused by overhead cables". Similar delays have previously caused chaos on the London-Grantham-Edinburgh line.

Silly question, but - before they electrify our line - will they devise a new way to supply the power, that doesn't get affected by strong wind or clinging snow bringing them down?”
