However, Pearson said they had come to a verbal agreement with United for the 19-year-old centre-back to remain with City during the remainder of their promotion push. The deal will be officially confirmed next week.

"He will be here until the end of the season and we are pleased we can extend it," he said.

"He has done well for us and he has played well. This is a good chance for him to get more league experience."

Keane initially joined City on loan with midfielder Jesse Lingard, in November, but was injured early on in his debut at Bolton.

He returned to United for treatment but, after both players' loans were extended to January 2, with Keane's loan extended further until the end of this month, he returned to City's starting line-up for the 6-1 drubbing of Huddersfield, who City face in the FA Cup fourth round tomorrow.

With Zak Whitbread and Sean St Ledger out injured, Keane has been an ever-present since.

Keane had previously expressed his desire to remain with City for the season.

"I think this team has the potential to get promoted and I would like to play a part in that," he told the Mercury.

"It would be a great experience if I stay."

“Yorkie dream on mate. More chance of finding rocking horse s... Sorry you are way off track there. United will only employ a long proven premiership manager or a top international one. In any case it's well documented that he favours handing the reins to David Moyes.”

“Keane has a classy old head on young shoulders.

He is destined for great things and Man Utd are very unlikely to want to lose a nailed on replacement for Rio.

So high praise indeed for NP who has a need for this type of player and has been trusted by Ferguson to be a pivotal part in the development of a future International player.

There is no way Fergie will want to be rid of such an excellent prospect.

This is currently a marriage made in heaven but Keane will go back to the United first team squad in May with my blessing.

I suspect that Schlupp is receiving full-back training with Evra so that our exposed Left Back position is better covered. Another sign of the extraordinary connection NP is developing with Man Utd. If we get Promotion this year and Fergie lasts another 2 years I think I might have a bet on who is being fashioned to take over from him.”

“United won't let Keane go on a permanent deal, not a chance. They genuinely see him as a future CB in the first team in the future and if you think he's good, you should see his twin, Will who's a striker, he's even better!

Great experience for him and definitely doesn't look out of his depth at this level.
Good bit of business from NP.”

“Geoff that's what I was harping on about the other day when I was trying to get over why I thought NP really wasn't bothered why Schlupp stayed or went. You may be right but whatever the reason he has decided Geoffrey ain't for him. Either that or Geoff is unsettled by not playing or being on the bench. It's a shame because there are not many as versatile as him but that's football as they say.”

“If Schluppie played regularly for us he'd be back in the Ghana squad where Pantsil is playing now. We can't afford to have a player gone for so long (like Bamba was). I don't believe Nigel is that keen on good African-qualified players and will let Schluppie go if United, or other top club, want him. So maybe a swap for Keane?”

“great news leicester city the lad is solid real prospect so now N.P get rid of Zak Whitbread because he is not worthy of wearing the shirt !!”

“Keane staying for the rest of the season is great news all round both for LCFC and for the further developement of Micheal Keane's game!!!

I much prefer Micheal Keane to Zak Whitebread!!!!

I think a straight swap Schlupp for Keane may be on the cards at the end of the season for the following reasons.

Man Utd must see something in Jeff Schlupp as he has stayed with them for 2 weeks now and not the original 1 week of training that was first reported.
Also Man Utd have enough cover at the Centre of defence but they are struggling for cover at left back where Jeff Schlupp has been recently playing for LC!!!!!!!!!”

“I see or rather think I do. Therefore if the club itself can be seen to be profitable they are ok still to splash the transfer cash. Thanks.”
