Travellers start camp near pub
Officials yesterday visited a family of travellers who have set up an unauthorised camp on the edge of a town.
The travellers have parked four caravans and other vehicles next to the A511 south of Coalville, near to the Birch Tree pub.
They arrived at the site last week having left the car park of a beauty spot at nearby Battram Turn where they had been living for some six years.
It is understood they moved from the site the day before North West Leicestershire County Council was planning to evict them.
Mat Bagley, co-ordinator of Leicestershire County Council's Multi-Agency Travellers Unit, said: "We have started doing the required assessment of their needs, to find out if they need any health and welfare assistance.
"They can't stay there for ever and we need to go through the proper processes before we work out what to do with them."
The council said it is planning to return the vacated Battram Turn site to its former use as a car park for the nature reserve.

“How can anybody call themselves travellers when they have illegally camped in the same place for six years? One way to save the council money would be to get rid of this unwanted and useless Leicestershire County Council's Multi-Agency Travellers Unit,”

"6 years " unbelieveable , if we build without permission etc etc etc does that take "6 years " to rip down take court etc etc etc ? no , what an unbelieveable story , BUT TRUE .”

“I wonder why the Leicester Mercury uses the word 'unauthorised' when they should be using the word 'illegal'?”
