Triathlon: Jodie Swallow's London 2012 ambition
Leicester triathlete Jodie Swallow has vowed to become a model of consistency in a bid to ensure she does not miss out at London 2012.
The 28-year-old has re-discovered her form after a five-year injury nightmare that started before the Athens Olympics and led to funding cuts and a year away from the sport in 2005.
Swallow, who finished the Athens Games in 34th place, topped the podium at the British Championships for the standard triathlon in May before destroying the field to claim the ITU long-distance triathlon world title in Perth last weekend.
But Swallow insists her exploits this year are just the tip of the iceberg as she embarks on a three-year plan to regain the form that saw her finish second at the Athens World Cup early in her career.
"London 2012 is the biggest thing that will happen in my lifetime and I can't miss that," said Rothley-based Swallow, who was Leicester Mercury Sportswoman of the Year in 2001.
"I've been around for two Olympic cycles now – this is my third one – and if I don't take the opportunity at London 2012 then I don't think I'll ever take the opportunity, so that's given me a right kick up the backside.
"My aim for next year is to finish in the top 10 of the World Championship ranking and that will mean I have to compete very well in five series races and I've got to be very consistent – that's completely and utterly do-able for me.
"The following year I want to be in the top five and the year after that it's the Olympic year, so all my preparation will be about the Olympics.
"It's about putting in three solid years rather than being up, down and injured."
Swallow was 35th in the overall World Championship rankings this year, with a best finish of 15th during the South Korean leg of the series.
But with the Olympic torch now just 1,000 days away from lighting up the capital, Swallow said everything is geared to hitting her peak in three years.
"If you're basing your life around three years time, you've got to give it 100 per cent of your time," she said.
"I've had a change of mindset completely and it's about focus and calmly getting on with your business. That's what we will all aim to do over the next two years and if we're in the limelight come 2012 then so be it."
