All those people who hate vegetables, apart from chips, are laying the foundations for future ill health (Mailbox, June 2). Although potatoes are a plant/vegetable they don't count as one of your five-a-day.

In a poll, 10 per cent of parents believed that Jaffa Cakes, cola, spaghetti hoops and orange squash boosted a child's intake of fruit and vegetables!

“Through recent experience I have concluded that the best way of improving the eating of a variety of healthy foods in younger children is for all to be given free school meals at primary school. Children will then gradually learn to eat and like vegetables. fruits and other healthy foods that many would never come across at home. Mine has!

This would be a great investment for the future and pay for itself with increased performance levels and decreased health spending. More use of physical activities at school would also contribute to healthy living.”
