University boss proud of 'honour'
A university vice-chancellor was yesterday named in a list of people who are improving their communities.
Professor Dominic Shellard, of De Montfort University, was placed 46th in The Observer's, Britain's New Radicals list, for his Square Mile Project.

The project, which was launched in April, aims to improve the lives of people living in Fosse Road North, Tudor Road, Woodgate and Newfoundpool, in Leicester.
Volunteers from the university have started a number of projects in the area, from tidying parks to giving free English lessons.
Professor Shellard said: "Everyone associated with the Square Mile project is extremely passionate about ensuring De Montfort continues to make a positive contribution to the development of the area.
"As a university that prides itself on its quality and distinctiveness, to be recognised in the first New Radicals list for an innovation we are so proud of is a real honour."
Prof Shellard was nominated by Dr Jason Wood, research director of the project.
Dr Wood said: "In a time of real economic and social challenges, this project shows how a university can change lives and make a positive difference to a community."

“Oh give us a break! Perhaps if prof Shellard was nominated by a member of the community rather than one of his employees we may be able to take this " honour" a bit more seriously. I am becoming increasingly irriated by the Mercury becoming Prof Shellard's official PR machine.”
