If evidence were needed that De Montfort University has complete and utter contempt for the community it serves, we only have to read your story (Mercury, November 3) regarding the Pump and Tap pub.

According to a university spokesman, they would not be extending the lease to permit a final Christmas celebration at the pub because "they wanted to get the site clear ready for demolition – possibly before Christmas".

Now let me see, having waited several years to get the Bowstring Bridge pulled down and not even having planning permission to build, it now becomes imperative to demolish the pub. Is the cost of demolition going up in January or is this just rubbing salt into the wounds to show the local community what DMU really thinks of them?

The university, along with its cohorts on the council, will surely go down in local history for all the wrong reasons.

If and when the councillors involved stand for re-election I wonder what they could possibly say about their past performance to encourage voters to elect them.

Come on, DMU, what harm can it do to allow the locals of the Pump and Tap to have a final Christmas get-together and to say goodbye to the pub in style?

Bah humbug don't be Scrooges!

John Wood, Glen Parva.

“Unlike Kulgan, Crydee, I sadly don't have the details of the previous owner's personal and financial situation at that time and so, without this specific information, I would be completely unable to speculate as to why he sold the property to DMU.

With regards to John Wood's comment - our elected council have entirely sold out to DMU!!! They are no longer serving the people they are supposed to represent and now seem to think they are above the government DCMS too. Our Council are going against the wishes of the DCMS and English Heritage, who are in the middle of a Listing appeal regarding the Bowstring Bridge, and continuing bloody-mindedly with the destruction! It beggars belief that these publicly funded Councillors think they will ever be elected in again!

DMU, I suspect, are thinking along the lines of getting all the bad publicity out of the way at once and by next year's Open Days, all will be forgotten.

They are ripping the historic heart out of the West End and vindictively destroying a pub to hurt a community who have dared to voice their discontent. By the time their next Open Days come around again, I doubt VERY MUCH that ANY of this will have been forgotten.”

“I think that the pub will be demolished before Christmas because the contractors are already on site, and it will be a lot less distributive doing into now then getting the builders and road closed off twice.”

“You mistake my meaning John. I mean the previous owner who sold to DMU.”

“Sorry but I thought I'd already done that with my reference to the councillors involved.”

“Perhaps your anger should be directed at the person who sold out to the monster called DMU?”
