Vegetarianism is on the increase
The letter to which Cristina Watson referred was deliberately moderate and even that strategy elicits a response ("Ranters have to give ground", Mailbox June 1)!
I presume the remark, "She actually has written an article that does make sense" should be translated as "an article that I find more acceptable"
Sorry to disappoint you, Cristina, but vegetarianism is becoming more popular. Recent figures indicate a 5.3 per cent drop in meat consumption in the UK between 2005 and 2009 even though the population has increased. According to Mintel 5.6 per cent of the population is veggie and the number is rising.
Even a part-time vegetarian diet is more beneficial to personal and environmental health than a full-time meat-based diet, as well as helping to alleviate global food shortages and animal suffering.
Let's remember "Rome wasn't built in a day".
Elizabeth Allison, Aylestone.

“I think Elizabeth is yet again guilty of taking statistics out of context (as per usual). The reduction in meat consumption is also a barometer to the economy and nothing to do with environmental or cultural trends, according to Mintel. The same company reported an INCREASE in red meat consumption in 2008. Let¿s see if meat consumption goes up as we come out of recession. It seems like Elizabeth is a Hoover for meaningless data.”

“Is Elizabeth Allison so conceited that she really thinks people would be disappointed that vegetarianism is on the increase?
As a meat-eater, I don't care who is a veggie whether it is on the increase or not. It is an individuals choice, just please do it without preaching that your way is the best and only way. Veggie's have made their choice, I have made mine.”

“Vegetarianism is on the rise I would say DESPITE Elizabeths comments. I've been veggie for 30 years and feel like killing something and eating it every time I see her letters!”
