A veterinary team has been called to Twycross Zoo after its latest arrival, a baby elephant, fell ill.

The male elephant calf, who has not yet been named, was born on Thursday.

But a zoo spokeswoman said yesterday that he had been taken ill on Saturday.

She said: "A veterinary team is with him and he's under close supervision.

"They are just making sure he is okay.

"He's a bit out of sorts, so we have taken him off public view."

His mother, Noorjahan, was the first of its species in the UK to become pregnant by artificial insemination.

The calf was born weighing 100kg (220lb).
