The man hit the victim in the face, causing him to fall to the ground, before walking away towards the Clock Tower.
The suspect can be seen approaching the victim at the very start of the video clip.
The victim was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary for treatment to an injury to his head. He was discharged a number of days later.
The suspect is Asian, aged between 25 and 30, with black hair. He was wearing a dark suit.
Pc Ivor Messiah, who is investigating the incident, said: “The assault took place on the same night the Christmas lights were switched on in Leicester which means there would have been hundreds of people in the city that night.
“The victim was in hospital for a number of days following the assault but thankfully has now been discharged.
“The suspect had a distinctive walk and we would urge people to have a look at the footage and contact us if they recognise the man.
“A number of people helped the victim after the incident and we would appeal to anyone who hasn’t yet spoken to the police to do so.
“If you attended the light switch on ceremony and witnessed the assault, or the events leading up to it, please contact us.”

“QUOTE "At the end of the day there is no fear of punishment." END OF QUOTE
This is, to be polite, rubbish. Even in the days when there was the ultimate punishment crimes of violence occurred all the time (I would suggest you read The Better Angels of Our Nature by Stephen Pinker but it's quite long and puts forward an argument using facts and science so it may not be your thing). The vast majority of crime is done unthinkingly, the people committing them are not only not thinking about being punished, they're not thinking about anything!
To give a recent example, New York had seen a long decline in the amount of violence (despite a blip in 2011) but it has not got tougher with sentencing, or brought back corporal punishment, and has "disestablished" capital punishment.”

“with CCTV of this quality we're sure to catch this person!!!! I agree, there never seems to be much information on what lead up to the event though.”

“Surely there must be footage of him from the front? Lots of CCTV up the High Street.
I don't think the walk is particularly distinctive though, it's the typical swagger of a certain type of 'man' who thinks the street belongs to him. And by the way he appears to give the CCTV camera the finger he clearly thinks he's untouchable. Let's hope the police can prove otherwise.”

“Oh_come_on, you are quite right, it is indeed simple logic. However, many people actually think they know better than the Police about these things. Shocking I know. These people can do the "simple" thinking easily enough, just not the "logical" part unlike you and I.”

“I do not find it frustrating at all. To print details of any of the statements taken regarding the circumstances of the attack negates any possibility of using new information from the appeal to verify the statements. Its simple logic. The circumstances can be reported as and when it goes to trial.”

“Does anyone else find these reports frustrating?
We are told that someone was attacked but we are not told what the circumstances were!
Is every attack unprovoked?
Anyway, If he is local, it shouldn't take too long to find the culprit from the video footage because of that silly walk.”
