Villagers are split over Kibworth merger vote
Villagers in Kibworth Harcourt have voted not to merge parish councils with their bigger neighbours Kibworth Beauchamp.
In a parish poll yesterday Harcourt residents overwhelming rejected the move.
-

However, only a quarter of the residents eligible to vote went to the poll with 221 (69 per cent) voting no and 91 (31 per cent) voting yes.
Fewer than one in five of the voters in neighbouring Beauchamp took part in the poll.

However, they voted overwhelmingly in favour of the merger.
Residents in Beauchamp recorded 549 votes in favour (87 per cent) and 84 votes against (13 per cent).
The results are not binding and are merely advisory.
The results will be collated as part of the Harborough District Council community governance review.
The district council was urging the merger to increase efficiency and save money.
It is unlikely the merger will now go-ahead.

“Siggus_Cattus, good comment
So the status quo should maintained
as there appears no other reason to change other than the bigger wanting to eat up the smaller Parish Council
and that is not good enough reason in itself”

“Surprise, surprise - the smaller village didn't want their council swallowed up by their neighbouring bigger council. This result was the most likely outcome so was it worth all the expense and resources of the district council to run what was only an advisory poll anyway -with the results not binding? Now a district council committee next week has to consider the outcome - basically one village FOR the grouping of the councils, and one village AGAINST the grouping. Starngely enough that was also the conclusion in the comments made by the two councils to the district council consultation on the matter before Christmas.
King Solomon had it easy when deciding the fate of a baby claimed by two mothers!”
