WEATHER UPDATE: Police warn motorists to stay off the roads as snow causes gridlock in Leicester
The police in Leicestershire have warned people to stay off the roads unless their journey is absolutely necessary.
They made the call as six inches of snow brought traffic to a standstill in the city and various locations in the county.

"Our officers are answering emergency only calls because we do not want to put them at risk.

"We would warn people to stay off the roads unless they really have to travel."
The force reminded people to only call 999 for real emergencies, and urged people not to call the police to report snowballs being thrown.

“Grit will not work properly unless it is ground in by traffic. But most motorist play follow the leader in the tracks of the motor in front so making only one lane open. You see this on the M way as the drivers abandon the fast lane instead of using it and keeping it clear. 40 odd years of HGV I always carried snow chains really stuck.”

“I drove around Aylestone Road and Narborough Road around 2:00pm yesterday and there was no evidence of gritting whatsoever. It was clear to me that snow was accumulating on the roads and that the situation would quickly become chatoic, I immediately phoned by wife and told her to get home from Anstey as soon as possible. It took her two and a half hours.
I appreciate that journeys are going to take longer in such conditions and with the best will in the world the authorities will never be able to magically make conditions perfect. However, it was obvious they hadn't even made an effort to do the obvious thing and grit the arterial roads in the early afternoon as anow was accumulating and before the rush hour. An absolute disgrace.”

“It has just taken my daughter 4 hours to get from school in Beaumont Leys to Evington Village by bus, due to the build up of traffic, please stay home unless your journey is vital.”

“The disruption would have been far less if the City's gritting lorries had done their job. I drove from LE1 to LE7 on Friday, setting off at 3.55 and arriving at 6.10. As far as the Evington shops there was no evidence whatsoever of salt or grit on the roads, so that we were all driving on an ice-rink. This includes the Welford Road, a major artery. (I'd like to commend all the drivers for their extreme care.) Only from the Evington shops onwards was the ice mashed up, after which we proceeded at a safe 15 mph.”
