Leicester Mercury

On the subject of the fate of horses following their services in the First World War, I thought Mercury readers might be interested to hear what happened to my grandfather's horse, Bob.

My grandfather, Fred Weaver, who died in 1977, often told me about the various horses in his charge throughout the war when he had the job of pulling the gun carriage. The last of these, Bob, survived and went back into domestic life.

Grampa heard no more about him, but one day when he was walking down a Leicester street in the 1920s, he thought the horse pulling the milk cart looked familiar.

He said, "Bob?" and the horse came straight over the road to him, dragging his astonished owner with him.

The milkman said: "Does he know you?" and Grampa said: "Does he know me? Look at him!"

They went over his history and distinguishing marks, and marvelled at the amazing chance that led to them meeting again.

What happened to Bob after that, nobody knows. I hope he was one war horse who had a good life, unlike so many of his contemporaries.

Katy Turner, Ratby.
