Wasps also have a right to life
I must respond to the letter "Drink of death" (Mailbox, September 9).
I am absolutely appalled by Elizabeth Lambert's method of eradicating wasps from her garden.
I find particularly disturbing the way in which the letter was written in a humorous tone as though in anticipation of the reader's amusement. What she is describing is simply cruelty and warrants no such response.
Wasps have as much right to enjoy the outdoors. In this time when wildlife needs all the help it can get in order to survive we should be looking at ways to provide for and make welcome all creatures that venture into our gardens not take pleasure in slaughtering them.
Mistakenly Elizabeth Lambert appears to feel pride rather than shame for her heinous device.

“Obviously Miss C J Hill has never had a wasps nest in her house. I have, twice! The first time they tunnelled through the mortar and made a nest on the wall cavity. The other time they made their nest in the water tank overflow. The only solution was to exterminate them! They are a pest to humans and animals.”

“There where a number of letters recently regarding selfish people putting out the so called drink of death. I think those people are ill informed about wasp and all they are doing is incourageing the wasp into there gardens. Elizebeth Lambert and all those who choose to kill for the sake of it shame on you. Leave a wasp alone and it will leave you alone. I ask you all next year forget your drink of death and see what difference it has.”
