West unable to shows restraint
Meat and over population are two of the main things filling up the world's atmosphere with dangerous levels of gases.
Consumption of goods and services by most people in the well-off countries is many times higher than in 100 countries of the Middle East, Asia, Africa and South America. We lack the ability, so far, to restrain ourselves. A conserver society would be more fulfilling.
It all contributes to up to 150,000 climate-affected deaths, assessed by the UN.
Referring to F Abraham's letter (Mailbox, August 28), more literacy for women is one of the biggest advances in curbing large families. In Bangladesh these have come down from seven to five children per family.
The Vegan Society assess that plant protein can be grown on one- third of the fertile land now used in Britain, by doing without the millions of acres growing animal feed. This is for a projected population of 75 million by 2050.
Think how dangerous greenhouse gas concentrations would be by now if China had not prevented 400 million births in the last 30 years. One child per family does not necessarily mean a reduced social life.
The West now needs to transfer clean technology to them to replace their coal power stations.
