An energy company planning to build up to 10 turbines on the site of a redundant coal mine will make its plans public this week.

Peel Energy wants to build a wind farm on the site of the former Asfordby mine, near Melton.

The company claims the 410ft(125m) turbines could generate enough electricity to meet the needs of approximately 10,000 households.

The technical and environmental impacts of the site are now being assessed.

Residents and businesses will be able to attend drop-in sessions today and tomorrow to find out more information.

Project manager Patrick Keogh said: "We believe Asfordby mine is a good location for a wind farm and we are keen to discuss our proposals.

"We envisage up to 10 turbines at the site.

"Once we have received feedback, we will complete the design of the wind farm and organise a public exhibition with more detailed information.

"Once all the survey work is complete and we have fully consulted members of the community and statutory consultees, such as Natural England, we intend to submit a planning application later in the autumn."

The company said each of the turbines would generate approximately 3mw of electricity and that the site would meet about 15 per cent of the 2020 renewable energy requirement for the East Midlands.

Other wind farms are also planned nearby.

Leicestershire County Council's cabinet last week backed plans for a nine-turbine farm near the A46 at Old Dalby, saying that "the likely future need outweighs the limited impact of the proposed development."

Next Generation Limited has applied to build nine 259ft (79m) turbines at Paddy's Lane, Old Dalby.

Nuon Renewables also wants to build six 393ft (120m) turbines at a former airfield south of Melton, near Great Dalby.

Melton Borough Council recently spent £100,000 successfully fighting wind farm plans in the Vale of Belvoir, near Bottesford.

Former Asfordby parish council chairman John Bullimore is against the latest plans for the Asfordby site.

He said: "I'm against it, but I haven't heard anyone else mention it. The last time there was talk of a wind farm there it was for four turbines. Now they're talking about ten. It's the Government that's pushing these things, but we're just as pretty as the Vale of Belvoir."

Asfordby parish councillor Frank Williamson said: "In principle it's a good idea, but a bit close to some buildings. There's a farm about 500 yards away and I imagine Asfordby Hill would be in a direct line of sight.

"The main thing people want to know is if it will mean cheaper electricity. I don't think it will. I'm hoping to get more information at one of the drop-in sessions and I advise people to go and have a look."

The plans will be on show at Ab Kettleby Primary School today from 4.30pm to 8.30pm, and tomorrow at The Stute Sports and Social Club, Welby Lane, Asfordby Hill, from 9am to 7.30pm.

“I presume this will have the same policy Chris Huhne is following with Nuclear and have no state subsidy. Including a higher rate for the electricity which effects those at the lowest end of the social spectrum as everybody electricities bills are higher for the privilege of having the wind turbines!”

“As the site is already a mine, wouldn't it be possible to make use of this by developing geo-thermal energy production in it, below ground?”
