Work completed on early stage of £3.5 million Humberstone Gate East revamp
The first phases of a multi-million pound revamp of a city centre street have been completed.
The 12-month project to improve Humberstone Gate East has been finished and the road will be fully open to bus traffic from today.
The return of the buses marks the end of the first two phases of a £3.5 million scheme to reduce congestion along the road and improve the area for pedestrians, bus passengers and cyclists.
City mayor Peter Soulsby said: "I'd like to thank shoppers, traders and bus users for bearing with us during the disruption.

"I am really pleased we are now able to open up the road and people can start to see the benefits for themselves."
The completed work includes the removal of the open space and fountain at the eastern end of the road to create a new carriageway for buses.
Pavements have been widened and improved and there are now new dedicated loading bays for delivery vans.
Bus stops have been improved with shelters and better access.
Cycles lanes have been introduced next to the central reservation and street furniture, lighting, bins and cycle racks have also been upgraded.
Crossing points for pedestrians have been included along the whole length of the road.
Trees are due to be planted early next month.
The final phase of the project is due to begin in January.

“They will forever dig town up and then wonder why people stay away, look at the mess they have caused on Granby Street, that debacle has been going on since the beginning of time!!”

“@DBLeicester. We are as one on our opinion of this area. This is one place where the feral pigeons actually provide a little class.”

“Seems like a lot of money for a bit of fresh looking pavement and a new bus stop or two. It seems better than it was before, but for how long is anyones guess. The local businesses in the area already drag it down somewhat with there terrible frontage and the local residents of the area do not do it much justice either to be honest...”
