Concerned city councillors have backed former council leader Ross Willmott, who said it was wrong to allow the EDL to march through the city centre.

Coun Willmott spoke out on Tuesday, and said it was "astonishing" that the police advised the council that the group should be allowed to parade through the city.

City centre ward councillors Patrick Kitterick and Neil Clayton have backed his stance, and say other councillors feel the same way.

Coun Kitterick said: "A march is going to cause huge disruption to shopkeepers and market traders on the busiest trading day of the week. Many people will choose to avoid the city centre altogether.

"I also have a problem with the march on a point of principle, because images of the EDL marching past the clock tower in a city like Leicester – which is so proud of its diversity – would be very damaging."

Coun Clayton said: "There's no real reason why the EDL couldn't have been banned from marching altogether and forced to have a static demonstration away from the city centre."

The Leicester Council of Faiths has also revealed it wrote to the police recommending that the EDL march be banned. Fayyaz Suleman, vice-chairman of the Council of Faiths, told a 100-strong meeting on Tuesday night that the group had opposed Saturday's march in Leicester.

Mr Suleman, speaking at an open meeting of the Council of Faiths at the Gur Panth Parkash Gurdwara, in Knighton Fields, said: "We felt that the EDL should be banned this time as they were last time.

"The police have met with us and explained that they feel it is easier for them to contain the march rather than deal with a static protest. We have accepted the police's position and their reassurances that it is the best of two not very good options."

City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby told the meeting he had spoken to the police who had advised him that the best way to deal with the EDL was to let them march in the city, but with very specific conditions.

“Comments are mostly history now.Banning the marches would have been wrong. That the two groups have different opinions is part of the freedom of a Democratic society. What if a demonstration was called for banning the lgbt from going in a parade in the City?Or our troops when they came home{nearly happened !].Or maybe banning a demonstration against the cuts this council are imposing and march through the City?
What was shown was the capacity for a well run Police presence to allow people to demonstrate.Yes it will have cost money.Money well spent, the Police earned it,we deserved it .
Now, as to councillors joining in the debate, is a bit of a joke. These clowncilors are the ones sacking council staff, cutting resources and wanting pay rises.I know where I would prefer my money to be spent.Councillors for Leicester?More Morcombe and Wise.”

“Do a head count. There's at least thirteen police officers and "officials" in this photograph. What are they all doing and why does it take thirteen of them to walk the route ?

That's where your council tax is going ladies and gentlemen.”

Go and read your history. It'll save embarrasing yourself with such crass statements.

Btw I notice you've changed your profile from David Haslett to David Anon. Presumably to avoid further confusion with the BNP activist from Hamilton on the leaked members list.”

“@Red-Ned. As one who so obviously celebrates diversity do you not think it would have behoved you well to have spelt Jagdish's name properly (not jadnish) unless you perhaps would prefer to be known as Red Nerd?

@Zed00. If you are going to start calling people 'thick' maybe you should check your posts for spelling and grammatical errors before pressing 'submit'. Just a thought.”

“It's a difficult one to call given genuine public order concerns but I'm really gagging on the stench of hypocrisy from EDL supporters. These people complain against counter protest which is also a democratic right and one exploited from the very outset by the EDL: they began by counter demonstrating in Luton. They complain about people saying they shouldn't be able to protest whilst demanding others whom they disagree with should not be able to protest.

I'm in favour of allowing people to protest, regardless of whether I find their views offensive. But I draw the line when the aim of such protest is to create disorder - a few statements from EDL people, including LGBT leader Liam Wood, suggest this is precisely the aim.

That they wilfully fail to acknowledge points raised by the Mercury in relation to the Rhea Page case, points which totally undermine the EDLcase for coming to Leicester, only add to that suggestion.”

“@davidh1967 - so because some councillors are of the opinion that the march should be banned, you think we are living in a state comparable with NAZI Germany? I think that shows how tolerant you are of anyone with a different opinion to yourself.

And I also think you'll find that in NAZI Germany thousands of bigots meeting up in a town, having a good march, intimidating the locals and smashing things up was positively encouraged, in fact it was a career move.”
