I see the Mercury is running a debate on the website about whether we should celebrate St George's Day.

Can you believe it? Can you imagine any other country even debating whether to celebrate their own national day or not? Other countries must look on us with amazement .

Can you imagine Ireland having a debate about whether they should celebrate St Patrick's Day? Of course not. In fact, St Patrick's Day is celebrated more here in England than St George's Day is. It's the same with other countries who celebrate their festivals or national days here in England. They are done without any questions asked .

Of course we should celebrate St George's Day and we should be given another bank holiday to do this.

However, this is England, so to do this is easier said than done.
