Young people across Leicester will be making waves on Wednesday with the launch of free swimming for under 16s.

In the past few weeks, thousands of youngsters have applied for the ID cards which will entitle them to free swimming at city leisure centres.

To celebrate the start of the scheme, there will be a pool disco at 4pm at Cossington Street Sports Centre.

There will be free goody bags with floats, goggles and water bottles for the first 40 customers at leisure centres across Leicester.

City councillor Andy Connelly said: "This is a really fantastic initiative and we hope lots of young people take advantage of the scheme.."

The Government-backed free swimming scheme will be available at Leicester Leys Leisure Centre, in Beaumont Leys; Aylestone Leisure Centre; Spence Street Sports Centre, Highfields; Cossington Street Sports Centre, Belgrave; Braunstone Leisure Centre; Evington Leisure Centre; New Parks Leisure Centre and Northfield House Primary School, Northfields.

Young swimmers need to get identity cards, which have been made available at schools and leisure centres. To apply, visit:
