Eight apprentices have begun the first training course in road maintenance.

Seven men from Leicester and one from Market Harborough, aged between 16 and 29, are taking part in an 18-month apprenticeship run by Leicester College and the city council.

It combines classroom and practical learning and will include placements with the council's highways team.

Deputy city mayor Rory Palmer said: "I am pleased to be welcoming the new apprentices to the city council.

"This is the first time we have had apprentices in our highways team.

"Expanding apprenticeships at the city council is part of our response to the youth unemployment challenge.

"It is important that every young person in the city can access further education, training or a work-based programme such as an apprenticeship, and this scheme helps to do that."

The course will lead to a level two diploma in highway maintenance.

The recruits took the number of apprentices taken on by the council this year to 41 – with five in customer service, nine in parks and horticulture, four in sports services and 15 in housing maintenance.

Alison Byrne, the council's apprenticeship scheme co-ordinator, said: "In the past two years we have expanded our apprenticeship scheme into customer services, sports and horticulture schemes, and continue to offer our successful housing apprenticeships.

"With the addition of the highways apprenticeship, we are now offering opportunities in really varied areas of council work."

“The Council should be applauded for doing something right, apprenticeships have long been overlooked in all trades. It stands to reason that if we don't train the engineers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians et al of the future then these trades will cease to exist and we'll become a country of cowboy workers.”
