How much cash will you splash on your Valentine?
After Gary Lineker told the Daily Star that he’ll be spending £12.50 on his wife this Valentine’s Day, Jennifer Morris and Georgia Naden hit the streets to find out if the people of Leicester will be as prudent as the city’s famous son.
Sally Watson, 22 Anstey, student
"I've just bought a house with my boyfriend, so we're not spending much, although a teddy for about £15 would be much appreciated."
Esther Opiyo, 20, Leicester, student
"I think Lineker's got it right – I'd spend a tenner and make something crafty, such as a cake. It's cheaper and more thoughtful."
Lucy Marsdon, 45, Leicester, graphic designer
"We're staying in, and I've bought my husband walking boot laces. We're pooling our money, maybe £40 each, to spend on something we can do together, such as a meal."
Ty Allured, 22 Leicester Forest East, unemployed
"I haven't done anything yet, I'll spend about £20 on chocolates and a nice card. I'll make it up when I have a bit more money."
Anne Freestone , 54 Countesthorpe, financial planner
"I think you can spend as much as you want – it's not the gift, it's the way you give it."
Faatimah Esmail, 32 North Evington, doctor
"I've bought gourmet chocolates and tulips... for my mum! I spend about £15 on her every year."
Neil Garner, 34 Desford, graphic designer
"I'm being tight this year, I have this card and that's it, so I'm only spending about £2.50."
Kayleigh Fitzgerald, 21 Kirby Muxloe, student
"I'll spend five quid because I'm a student – possibly on chocolates and a rose."
Michael Hamill, 41 Wigston, technician
"My girlfriend can have whatever she wants, money's no object! She's the love of my life. We always celebrate Valentine's. It's not all about money though, it should be a surprise. This year, I've bought a bike for her to cycle to work on."
Thom Lilley, 19 Wigston, student
"There shouldn't only be one day a year for love! I rebel against the commercialism. Last week, I got tickets to a comedy gig, and I buy my girlfriend flowers at least once a month."
Ricky Lount, 20 Thurmaston, student
"I don't celebrate it through choice – it's got to be done or it's not worth the hassle. I spend £60 on a nice meal and the cinema... then we both get something out of it. A beautiful experience for all!"
Martin Washbrook, 55 Aylestone, city council worker
"We celebrate it the day before. When I was wooing my wife, I forgot her address, so posted her card through her letterbox the night before. I made such a racket she invited me in, and now we're celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary!"

“Everything is associated with bl**dy money, I tell my Wife that I love her and more every day, I don't see the sense in pigging out on expensive chocolates, and I buy her flowers regularly, I still don't get a discount from the Florist, so I'm blowed if I'm shelling out £3-50 a bloom for Roses.....You've got lots of hearts up today Rachel, you can be my Faraway Valentine x”
