Put cathedral plans on hold
May I add my comments to the debate about the proposed Cathedral Gardens development?
Is it a good idea? Yes! Anything that enhances this city's quality of life and attractiveness to "paying" visitors, tourists and ourselves is a good thing.
What would it do? Several functions – provide a quiet, relaxing, beautiful spot and a venue for outdoor cultural and religious events.
How should it operate? In partnership, with a combined city and cathedral team of working and volunteer gardeners and wardens – that's public participation and night time fences and gated protection.

When should it happen? In five years' time. Not now. It should be when public and private economies are much better, unless there are private grants and commercial funds to pay for it now.
Who pays for it? See the above question and answer. Also, what about St George's churchyard? Ideal for similar treatment, prevention easier done and less costly.

With reference to MT Flint's recent letter ("Ask the origin of Mother Nature", Mercury Mailbox, October 11), I feel that your letter is trying to force your views of either Christianity or Catholicism (whichever it is you practice), specifically with the reference of "there has to be a god (our creator)". I don't believe in a god.
I believe in Mother Nature and that she is the creator of the world, which I believe is the same thing you believe about your God.
I and possibly many others from all religions could find this offensive, and I personally think that it's people who push their religious views on others that cause the big problem we have in this world, where all the different religions are fighting against each other.
So maybe if you and others can't accept that other people have different views to your own, then don't say anything at all.
