Front of cop shop gets the chop in revamp
The front of Wigston police station is being removed as part of a £2.2million revamp.
A crane began to pull down the front of the station, in Bull Head Street, on Monday.
Work started at the station in August, when the front inquiry office closed.
Officers hope the rebuild, which includes revamping offices at the back of the station and insulating the building, will be complete by the summer.
A police spokesman said: "A crane has begun the six-week-long demolition of the stilted front section of Wigston police station which was in poor condition, was poorly insulated and in need of major structural work.
"Wigston station will remain in use by police officers and staff throughout the building works."
He said that while the closure of the inquiry office might cause inconvenience for members of the public, "it is unavoidable and in the interests of site safety".
People are being asked to go to Welford Road police station during the closure.
