Many courses are starting soon
I was interested to read in Mr Leicester (March 6) a letter from my friend Cynthia Brown about memories of the Leicester Film Society at Vaughan College and a reference to the foundation of the college in 1862 and its development into a working men's college, which has now become part of the University of Leicester's Institute of Lifelong Learning.
As Cynthia doesn't mention the Workers' Educational Association, I thought readers might like to hear of it.
The Leicester branch is based at Vaughan College and runs many classes on various subjects – history, poetry, singing, music and so on.
Cynthia herself has run a research class on the history of the Leicester branch and the students produced an interesting book. She also teaches other classes each term, including two in the summer.

I write regarding the article about squirrels ("Nice one, squirrel", February 28).
What do you think entitles us to treat animals in the way we do?
All animals deserve their life, not just endangered species.
A country is judged by how it treats its animals. All animals are welcome in my garden.
Regarding foxes, I prevent, not kill, by erecting barriers.
If people took to a plant diet, there would be fewer starving in the world and animals would be free from pain and misery.
Skin, fur and feather look better on their owners.

Why does it take so long to receive your job seeker's allowance?
My son was granted this well over six months ago and, despite inquiries, letters and phone calls he has yet to receive payment. How is he expected to live?
