Fire crews tackle blaze at warehouses in Cambridge Road industrial estate, Whetstone

Firefighters tackled a blaze on an industrial estate in Cambridge Road, Whetstone, last night which involved two warehouses full of tyres.

Five crews from Leicester and Wigston fought the fire at the industrial estate, which is near the M1 and homes in Cosby. They were called to the scene at about 6.15pm, after passers-by reported seeing smoke.

They found two buildings, both about 30m by 30m, were "well alight".

A fire service spokesman said: "They were being used to store tyres and fertilizer, although it appears the fertilizer was untouched.

He said that no homes had to be evacuated because of the blaze but police were called on warn traffic on the nearby M1 as smoke from the fire blew across the motorway.

Crews were at the scene until late last night and damping down at the site was under way by 10pm.

    “I live a matter of metres away, couldn't believe how thick the smoke was! Thank god we didn't get evacuated. After a while, the police closed the road as the ammount of cars was causing the fire crew issues when they were re-filling!”
