In defence of 'annoying' correspondent
I feel sad for Glyn Calow that he is so upset by letters written by Elizabeth Allison, a caring lady who would appear to have more compassion in her little finger than a large majority of the population who are content to sit at the table and enjoy a meal, despite the fact that innocent animals have suffered greatly to provide it ("A most annoying correspondent," Mailbox, March 8).
How many people actually know what goes on in abattoirs or are anxious to find out?
Generally, meat-eaters bury their heads in the sand about the fact what they are eating was a creature which had emotions, could feel pain and had been deprived of its life far too soon.
The one thing, sadly, animals have not been given is a voice. Their only hope therefore is people such as Elizabeth who can speak on their behalf.

It is so hypocritical to profess to love some animals and, with no regard whatsoever, happily eat others.
Elizabeth always writes letters which contain fact. I suggest Mr Calow reads them in an unbiased fashion and accepts what she is trying to put across is that we should treat animals in a humane way.
They were put on this Earth in the same way human beings were. What right do we have to abuse them?
Yes, I too am a vegetarian and I will defend the rights of animals as long as I am able.

So, George Osborne went swanning off to Brussels to fight the corner of the bankers.
It's a clear indication of what interests this Government is looking after – and it's not the interests of the British people.
All Osborne is doing is looking after the people who bankrolled him. Let us not forget it was the banks that caused the problems with the economy in the first place, pure and simple, yet they still want millions in bonuses.
The EU is right to cap bonuses. When you think about it, £1 million a year and then a £1 million bonus can't be bad.
It says all we need to know about the Tories when they try to defend the indefensible yet punish the poor and vulnerable.
Let's also not forget this nasty Tory Government is a rich Government for the rich by the rich.
To conclude, on the very day this Government will turn the thumbscrews that bit harder – April 1 – it will give its multi millionaire friends up to £100,000 in a tax rebate.

We and our neighbours recently had graffiti sprayed on to our garage doors.
My wife reported this to Leicester City Council and a team from the cleaning department removed the offending graffiti the next day.
What an excellent service. Many thanks for the prompt response.

“What a stupid, fatuous comment J Tansley makes about those who sit round a table and dare eat meat. The emotive language this person along with her notorious veggie pal uses about "innocent" animals will never win the argument.
It may well be they are compassionate but so are a lot of folk who enjoy eating meat. There is a vast difference between eating meat and those who cause animal suffering and J Tansley and all the other veggie minority would do well to remember that.”

“Why are these letters together? Two headlines might help. One subject interests me, the other doesn't.
Keep up the good work Elizabeth. Civilisation has a long way to go.”

“How dare J.Tansley insinuate that the majority of meat eaters, myself included, have no compassion? Unpleasant comments such as this from people who consider themselves superior to others does nothing for the cause, whether it be vegetarianism or anything else. I suggest J.Tansley moderates their opinions if they wish to convince others as to the benefits or otherwise of a vegetarian diet.”

“J Tansley, what does "animals were put on earth in the same way humans were" in terms of a moral argument? It is merely a description of evolutionary process. That same evolution has given humans an ability to make choices which we label as moral but in fact are not. It is one thing to criticise how animals are raised and slaughtered (a moral issue) but not to extend that to the act of eating meat itself. Our teeth show that we are naturally omnivores”

I would remind Eddie Sentance that it was Gordon Brown who 'robbed' our pensions and sold our gold reserves at a rock bottom price (I believe to support the Euro) compared with today's value, gold reserves being our 'hedge' in desperate times. Where is Gordon by the way?
I presume Eddie is not aware, or chooses to ignore the wealth of Labour opposition MP's! The truth is there is little difference between the Lib/Lab/Cons, the electorate will, as always, vote for what they perceive as the 'lesser of three evils' come election time! Therein lies our continuing problem!”
