If you want to research possible causes,

1. Armageddon - (an uprising or dispute of rival factions of humanity) - only a complete global nuclear holocaust could bring this about our extinction as even those on the space station would be stuck there In this scenario.

2. Plague or Pandemic - there are many that could bring this about, but differing global temperatures and isolated communities and scientific outposts or those in controlled environments (at sea), would make this unlikely.

3. Celestial Event - The Sun has passed it's period of heightened activity, we got some pretty northern lights, a bit of interference, but nothing major, the next cycle is 11 years.

4. Near earth object - nothing detected near enough to get here in 6 days

5. Seismic event - Most Likely - Polar Shift is continuous - and has happened in the past - we are overdue this event - key signs are increase in magnitude earth quakes, volcanic activity, temperature increase in the mantle below faults.
Likely outcome is what is called a Mega Thrust Earth Quake - (sorry wife works for British Geological Survey).. this is the most likely - there is a tension spot under Seattle.
There is also a giant (and I mean giant - bigger than Olympus Mons), Volcano rising under Yellowstone national park at the moment). Signs of this event also regularity of geysers and hot mud springs increases.. (don't know have a look to see if old faithful has got more regular).

6. Man made event. De-forestation leads to earths ability to absorb CO2. Deforestation releases CO2, pollution in amazon leads to accumulation of Methane Hydrates, coral dies in other areas also increase pollutants, methane hydrates increase in temperature and are released from sea bed, temperature of atmosphere increases, sun ignites savannah, lack of water in amazon makes forest burn, more hydrates are release, sea burns, earth is covered, earth cools, snow falls, earth reflects sun, cools further, glaciation occurs, thinner atmosphere transports ash from normal volcanic activities blocking sun, atmosphere cools further and ozone layer starts to repair, once clouds settle earth is white, with a new ozone layer and in an ice age.
This occurs in cycles and according to core science it's natural and it's overdue, and our pollution it more than likely going to be the trigger to bring it on again.
