“"Should musicians play for free, for charity?"If they played for free, where is the money, doh!”

“Many people ask me as a musician - why don't you do a little free set for charity? There's no thought to the time it takes to prepare, or the equipment that has to be maintained etc.I would never ask anyone, 'Would you mind coming and doing a day's typing and giving your wages to charity?'.Most workers are not put on the spot and asked to donate their living, but it seems acceptable to expect musicians to.I sometimes do office work to pay the bills when music doesn't. If I could afford to work for free, for charity, I would not be doing office work!Oxjam are an example of this - they expect free musicians, but they are prepare to pay wages of others involved (e.g. bar staff at events etc, ).BBC's Children In Need pays thousands in fees just to one presenter for the evening.”

“You will find many famous musicians will do a lot of work for charity while that may not be directly playing music.”

“It's up to them really whether they give up their time.I know plenty who do, but ultimately it should be their gift and their choice rather than someone leaning on them to do it.I have DJ'd for free and later found out the doorman and bar staff were all getting paid. Left a sour taste so now I just won't bother. It's not my job, but it is my time, and if others put a value on their time when I was prepared to give mine for free then I'm afraid I am no longer interested. It's like gift aid. Admission can be taxed, but if you donate as a gift to charity and they reward you with entry as a guest (i.e. for free in return) then the whole donation goes to the charity. Why do we have this nonsense.. and I can't believe some people say no I'll pay the 10 pounds entrance fee, rather than donate 10 pounds to the cause.. The same amount of money goes from their pocket either way, but it makes a big difference to the recipient.”
