“I find it brilliant,
To make policing more efficient and accountable to the public,
they've created a host of 80k a year posts, which anyone can apply for,
and the public vote on their favourite.
The police hierarchy stay exactly the same, become less accountable for mistakes, because you can vote the new fall guy out of office instead. At which point they have another election to find a replacement.
I don't know who the candidates are (in any detail) or what experience they have of running a police department, or a budget for flexible response organisation.
It's alright saying we'll cut down on fuel bills this year by only flying one helicopter, but what if there is a major uprising, do you try and manage it using only the on shift officers, and allocated vehicles and resources and stay in budget?, or do you respond properly by calling in the off shift personnel, and using everything at your disposal?
How much extra will it cost when these people become unpopular for various reasons and end up getting ousted? We don't need icing on the top of the police force, we already had that with the Home Office. What we need is accountability at every level of the existing police force, without shackling them so they are afraid to do their jobs, and removing red tape so they can make key decisions at the higher levels without having to go cap in hand to the ministers for approval. What we also need is a Home Secretary with a spine to put their own job on the line rather than paying someone else to be their firewall.”

“@Rachel_Liecs - "how do we vote? x"
"how do we vote? x"
.
"I would love to vote and i am inder 18 but i guess when the times comes to vote i will be over 18 but it you wasnt at that time then you should have a vote why not?? x
As you stated before you're not old enough to vote in this polling, so in answer to your question you wait until you are 18, ensure you are on the electoral role and a card will be put through your door telling you when and where to vote.”

“I will be voting for the Police and Crime Commissioner elections as it is not just for Leicester MacMonkey, that is how. I live in London, but I have another house up north where I live from time to time. Please see below to help you.
These are the areas that need the voters to support them:

“So who are the candidates? not just names, after all we are being asked to interview the candidates for a well paid job, so we should know a bit more about them, and what are their USP's? Not that it matters to me about Leics, apart from I own a house there, but I am on the Electoral Role for Nottinghamshire, and we've had nothing of note in the media, unless you happen to tune into weekday daytime local radio, assuming you work somewhere that will let you listen to it.
Not one of these candidates has been round telling me what they are going to do, and why I should vote for them. And what is really funny is that one of them is the Lib Dem Candidate and another is the Conservative Candidate.. doesn't an affiliation represent a conflict of interest.
Last I heard, the emergency services don't work for the Cabinet or any party, they are Statute, and work under any empowered Government or appointed authority. So what does it matter what alliance each candidate has - they are applying for a job, not representing their party.”

“City-c10....Thanks for the links that give us all the information required :) only joking
so on a summery one paragraph per candidate you're going to cast your vote for commissioner
well sorry i need to know a bit more
It would be nice to have a laid down policy and criteria for expenses for their term in office
Not i use to wear a suit and my eyes are blue vote for me
Fair enough some one or all maybe will send out the required information in a more detailed flyer next week closer to the voting day on which we the voters can hopefully make an educated decision on which candidate to vote for
But for me its still a mickey mouse election for a puppet post and a total waste of our monies
that in this day and age could be spent more wisely
But to sum it up if it aint broke dont fix it”

“Morning David, not sure what you mean about backing chappy up or saying the same thing as him. So please explain. We agree on some things and do not on others. What do you mean by voting sites?
I do agree with the article author to an extent, it doesn't seem to have been promoted very well and it will be interesting to see what the turnout is like.
I am well aware that the elections are nationwide, except for london of course, which is why i wondered where city_c10 planned to vote. I remembered he lived in london but had never seen any mention of a place up north.
I understand completely now. It would appear jaybe11 noticed the same thing, it does happen on here sometimes occasionally more than person share the same view
Anyway what do you think about these elections? Personally i feel people will vote for the party these candidates are from rather than their abilities.”

“DavidJCB - we don't all say the same thing and we don't back eachother up.
I seem to remember only this morning disputing a view of Jaybe11 regarding House Prices..
and I have often been contradictory to MacMonkey74.
We do agree a lot of the time, maybe because we don't presume or judge without either having a vested interest or background, or maybe that we are adults and we have the ability to make calculated decisions.
I can assure you, I make my own decisions, as I suspect to most others on here. So I don't really understand your comment.”

“Oadbylad - So you know nothing about the article you have posted?
"well sorry i need to know a bit more" - Yes you do.
"Thanks for the links that give us all the information required :) only joking" - I agree, but at you.
As for the rest of the comments - well as always my smile has got a lot bigger :)”

“City_C10 - You can smile in a patronising manner as much as you like,
but I think we all know the purpose of the elections, and their proclaimed importance.
What we don't need is another Quango in charge of someone who knows their job.
We are the interviewing body in this case, and as yet we have names and a bit of diatribe, but no CV or references on which to make an informed decision.
Some will choose not to vote, whilst others will see it as a wasted opportunity,
but if you cannot be sure what the consequences of voting for any of the candidates may be,
as you cannot separate them on their suitability to carry out the role, then abstinance may be a better option.
I can't understand the amusement you find in disparaging others.
If you would be so kind as to explain your amusement, so others can learn from un-ending proprietry it would be appreciated.”

“Some may castigate you for that attitude happy1900 but it would appear that you are not alone in viewing this coming election as nonsense. Democracy maybe something that should be treasued and not taken for granted but the politicians are making it difficult by failing to engage the public with what will surely be a pivotal role in our community.
I still intend to vote but hope that we hear more about the candidates in the next few days so i can make a more informed choice.”
Sunday, November 11 2012, 9:30PM
“Thankyou for your interest DavidJCB but perhaps you'd like to tell us what you think about the up and coming elections? I am well aware that they are nationwide so kindly stop misrepresenting my comments.
Your contributions over the last few months tell us little about what you actually think about any of the articles you comment on but instead focus on other users on here.
On that note, will you be voting? Do you think that it's going to be a walkover for the labour candidate as they have so much support in the City? Are you concerned that the conservative candidate will simply be used to try and push through further cuts if he wins?
Those are some of my thoughts anyway I would appreciate hearing yours.”

“David JCB what facts exactly do I need to get straight?
I did say in one of my replies that I am live in Notts and the Leics candidates don't affect me apart from the house I have their, but my registration is in Notts, and we haven't heard a peep from our own candidates sufficient for us to make a judgement.
If I said 2+2 is 4 - you'd say something like - Chappy get your facts straight!! You wouldn't say 2+2 is not 4, you wouldn't give an alternative opinion, but you expect your little digs, and your support of others to maintain popularity. This is why people with a real opinion and a foundation of thinking (whether wrong or right), get so irate. Those with true intellect believe in evaluation before determination. Think about it.”

“City_c10 - Why is it my job to chase up the candidates and find information out about them.
I am not the one applying to the Electorate for a well paid job?
Surely it's up to them to impress me if they want my vote.
They expect me to take time out of my day to put them in a position of trust, with exceptional
benefits. And I don't care much for the tactic of leaving it late. That shows a disregard for voters, in the fact that it says we'll vote for the one freshest in our mind, rather than being given time to weigh up each candidates merits and failings.
They all represent a political party, and the Police and Judicial Services should not be aligned to any political bias. I have stated in my personal opinion it's a position we don't need, simply elevate the accountability of those currently in charge of our Police forces, without tying their hands, and making them more afraid of the repurcussions than making decisions.
You are right though C10 - it will do.. which is why I am not rising to it any more.”

"City_c10 - Why is it my job to chase up the candidates and find information out about them.
I have never asked you that Chappy? However, feel free to answer it? Otherwise I have not a clue mate what you are asking me?”
Tuesday, November 13 2012, 11:10PM
“Maybe not your exact words C10, but You stated the "Facts of the Candidates can be found"..
This may be true C10, but I don't feel I should have to look. They should be eager to tell me why I should vote for them.
We have one independent in our area who is an ex police chief, so if I did vote it would automatically be for him.
David JCB - I am sorry but I do not want to engage you in perpetuating this jejunely diatribe any longer. In answer to your question I mean exactly what I say, and if you can't understand it, I cannot help you.”

“I see the electoral commission are now going to hold an inquiry into how these elections took place and the resulting low numbers of voters. It will be interesting to see their conclusions when they come out in the new year, especially as they are currently saying advice they gave before the election was ignored.”
“It's 7 days and counting to an election no one’s heard of
Next Thursday polls open in the Police and Crime Commissioner elections. And the whole thing has been a disaster from start to finish.
Over 5000 of you joined candidates from all parties and none to sending a message to Theresa May. The reply is pretty much what we expected.
The Home Office is claiming they’ve done their bit. But it’s all been too little, too late. It’s clear more people are now aware of this election because of the scale of the disaster.
We’ve done our bit, but let’s not let the Government brush this one under the carpet.
We’re looking at the lowest turnout in British history, and we need answers.
So let’s look beyond November 15th. Whether you support these elections or oppose them, I hope you’ll take this chance to have your say.
Best,

Copied and paste from an email i received from the ERS
Just take a look at the Mercurys own poll 57% say that they will not vote why?
because most of that 57% don't even have a clue what its all about
And we all know whos going to pick up the bill”
