TV REVIEW: Dannii Minogue: Style Queen
By Gemma Collins
I'm not really a fan of shiny celebrity documentaries, where the camera follows a star to the painful point of tedium, and out from behind that perfect smile, emerges a spoilt brat.
But Dannii Minogue: Style Queen (ITV2, 9pm) was a rather pleasant surprise.
In the third and final part of this running commentary with class, the X Factor judge starts writing her autobiography, attends the worldwide launch of her Project D clothing line, and then heads back to Australia to prepare for the birth of her child.
She's certainly blooming. And let me just add, blooming beautiful.
OK, I'm making myself cringe now, and I know she gets paid to look good but Dannii is undeniably attractive without make-up.
"The last six months have been a rollercoaster ride," she says.
And she's not joking. There's been the Marks & Spencer billboard campaign, an autobiography, the recording of new music (ahem), the Project D fashion label with her best mate Tabitha, an accompanying fragrance – and all while she's expecting a baby.
And then there's the love of her life, Kris. As you'd expect, he's a hottie. His accent isn't the most refined, and yet they're seriously happy – or seriously good actors.
"That'll be us soon, walking through the park with a pram," he says, going all gooey, as their taxi circles through a leafy part of London.
At the Lanesborough Hotel, everything is set for the launch of their perfume.
"Spray me babe, spray me," she cries, throwing her head back. "You're such a perfume whore, you love it," laughs Tabitha.
Is it wrong to want to be friends with these women? I guess that's the down-to-earth appeal Dannii was going for in this documentary but they seem fun – dancing in cabs, designing a clothing range and launching it in Harvey Nics, and spending a ridiculous amount of money on revolting kaftans.
The thing is, you could take away Dannii's fame and fortune, and it's fairly obvious these two would still be friends; because when she's happy, when she's in her comfort zone (as she is right now), Dannii's a long way from the drastic, plastic, self obsessed vacant, the music industry wants to make her.
"I don't want it to be over," she says, as the last few leave her successful Project D launch in London.
"Shall we have cupcakes and Champagne?" she giggles.
As she drives to the airport, bound for Melbourne, she reflects on life.
"The last six months with Tabs has been absolutely brilliant," she says. "Our only defence mechanism is to laugh. I've learnt a lot from her.
"Being really happy attracts good things to you – there might be wedding bells," she smiles. "But I can't get my head round being a mum."
Obviously that was a few months ago. So if you didn't know, she had the baby – Ethan Edward Smith – on July 5.
And Kris is the proudest dad in the world. Aw.
