An MP has endorsed research which shows how Leicester could cut carbon dioxide emissions by 40% within 10 years.

Leicester South MP Peter Soulsby is supporting research commissioned by Friends of the Earth showing how local authorities, including Leicester City Council, could meet the target by 2020 while also creating new jobs.

The survey aims to find out how many jobs could be created by councils which implement green measures such as insulating homes and businesses, installing low-carbon district heating systems and fitting renewable energy sources to buildings.

The jobs created would include loft laggers, architects, plumbers, electricians, plasterers and insulation specialists as well as administration, transit and warehouse positions.

Sir Peter said: "Job losses as a result of the recession have been devastating for people in Leicester and measures like those suggested would help Leicester to combat the recession while simultaneously meeting carbon reduction targets."

“Come on LM Reporters. You use Sir Peter in the last sentence yet fail to use the honorific in the second one. It should read Sir Peter Soulsby. This man has been honoured by Her Majesty and is due the correct honorific.”
