Two guild members are remembered
QUORN: TG monthly meeting opened with a short silence in memory of two long-standing members of the Guild, Edna Rabone and Ruth Moorhouse.
The ballot on possible change of day and time of meeting was inconclusive, and it was agreed to remain with the third Wednesday evening until 2010.
The Guild would be taking part in the Quorn May Fair, selling books and jigsaws, which members were bringing along. "The History of Costume" was the subject of their speaker, Mrs Teresa Thompson. She had learnt to sew at an early age and later became interested in fashion.
The original purpose of clothing was to display one's status or identity.
Teresa's story began with the Celts and the long-lasting T-shaped tunic for men, who wore braids on their legs. Each era had a pair of hand-made dolls, man and woman, authentically dressed.
Teresa went through each of the ages, pointing out the variations of dress and increase of decoration, for men and women. By this time, the 1800s, and 45 costumed dolls, Teresa had come to the end of the first part of her talk, and part two will happen at a later date to be arranged.
The next meeting is on Wednesday May 20, when a talk on "Driving for the Older Person" will be heard. Please come along to the Church Rooms, near Rawlins Community College, at 7.30pm. All will be welcome.
