Not holding us up? Tell that to drivers
I would like to start by saying I have never written to the Mercury before, but after reading "Closed lane not holding up cars" (Mercury, February 7), I had to put pen to paper.
I could not believe what I was reading. Try telling that to the thousands of motorists you see morning after morning sitting in traffic queues when, before the lane closure, this was not the case.

The pavement in Newarke Street is twice as wide as in other parts of the city and appears to be yet another waste of money.
If the council has spare money for such an idea, why not use it to fill in the hundreds of potholes I come across each morning?

I know this letter will do no good whatsoever and if the decision is made by the powers that be, it will go ahead – just look at the £5 million about to be wasted on the bus lane in Glen Parva.
When will people realise that the cost of using the bus is what puts people off using them – £5.20 a day from Whetstone – not the journey time.
The elected powers appear not to listen to the public. It really is a waste of time getting out of your chair to vote.
Mrs J A Hutchinson, Whetstone.

What you mean is they do not agree with your views. There are voters who differ from your ideas”

“I so agree with Mrs Hutchinson as to the absolute ridiclous idea to close a lane in Newarke Street. Do the idiots who have suggested the scheme actually no where Newarke Street is? Have they walked along with open eyes and seen the queues of traffic? If they do walk along there I'll gladly have a chat with them while sitting waiting to move. I can only imagine they looked at the traffic very early morning or very late at night, when our working day is finally completed and we just want to get home”
