McFly - a band with seven number ones, multi-million selling albums and a Brit award under their belts – will be playing at Leicester's 11th Summer Sundae festival.

The pop-rock foursome have today been confirmed for the annual music event at De Montfort Hall.

Singer and rapper Example, Leicester veterans Showaddywaddy, 90s favourites Reef and three-piece I Am Kloot were also among 20 acts announced by organisers this morning.

They join The Maccabees, Blur's Graham Coxon, Brit-nominated folk singer Newton Faulkner and psychedelic rockers The Bees on the bill.

Summer Sundae director Rob Challice said: "I think it's a strong line-up and I'm really pleased with how it's coming together.

"It has a lot of my favourites – Shonen Knife, I Am Kloot and Wolf People – and I'm also looking forward to Graham Coxon, The Maccabees and a couple of acts we haven't announced yet.

"We have some strong pop acts in Example and McFly. There's definitely enough for two or three different audiences."

Dave Bartram, of Showaddywaddy, said: "I've been to Summer Sundae myself and it's a great occasion that has put Leicester firmly on the festival map.

"It's fantastic that we've been asked to perform, and you can bet your life that we'll give it our best shot not to disappoint, in spite of the fact that we may be a little incongruous compared to the rest of the bill." More acts, including the local artists, are set to be announced over the coming weeks.

"We will be releasing the regional bands over the next few weeks," said Rob.

"We're currently looking at all of those, we get a few hundred every year. We'll whittle that down to between 12 and 15. We'll also be announcing the comedy acts as well. I hope by the end of April we'll have everything announced."

Music fans gave their verdict on the line-up yesterday.

Student Henry Ruddock, 22, of Northfields, said: "For a small festival, it's a surprisingly good line-up."

And Jodie Samson, 18, from Thurmaston, said: "I'd like to go this year because of the line- up.

"I'm a fan of Graham Coxon and Newton Faulkner, so I will probably be going."

Computer analyst Kamaljeet Singh, 20, of Evington, said the festival could do with some urban artists.

But he added: "I went last year and I thought it was good.

"It's great there are acts of different music types, as the festival attracts more people."

Summer Sundae is on at De Montfort Hall, Leicester, from Friday, August 12, to Sunday, August 14.

Last year, the festival attracted about 18,000 music lovers over the three days, which featured more than 100 acts playing on six stages.

“Hang on, wasn't Summer Sundae started and sold as an alternative 'indie' festival?? I have been going to SS for years and each year the mainstream bands have been popping up that most of the loyal SS attendees have no interest in. I'm glad I haven't bought my tickets yet as I shall go further a field this summer to an alternative indie festival instead!”

“It's neither DMH or LCC that book the acts. It's Coda as they have been doing for 11 years. I'm guessing after LCC screwed up royally the DMH management, Coda have decided to make the 11th the last one and ensure the bill will sell out no matter what has gone before. It's all about bills.”

“If the council and DMH want to ignore half the punters that made Summer Sundae such a great festival for the last decade in order to chase a mainstream demographic, that is their perogative.

They might as well have it in Abbey Park and get Leicester Sound to sponsor it now though.”
