'We should be looking to ban the EDL march in Leicester'
City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby has been urged to ask the Home Office to outlaw Saturday's English Defence League march.
The call was made yesterday by former city council leader Ross Willmott.

Former Leicester City Council leader Ross Willmott
He said he was concerned at the potential for disorder breaking out along the route allocated to the group, which includes Belgrave Gate, the Clock Tower and Church Gate.
Instead the group – whose members turned violent during a previous demonstration in the city in October 2010 – should only be allowed to go ahead with their "static" demonstration outside the city centre, Coun Willmott said.
The EDL yesterday appeared to agree to the route and conditions laid down for it by the police by posting a message to its supporters on its Facebook page, saying they should arrive at the agreed departure point – St Margaret's Pastures – at the time stipulated by police.
Coun Willmott, who claimed other members of the council supported his position, said: "The march will allow the EDL to effectively take control of these streets in the city centre.
"It's astonishing that the police have advised the council that these people should be allowed to parade along a busy shopping area on a Saturday.
"The march will be intimidating for many people."
He also criticised the route allocated by police and the city council to Leicester Unite Against Fascism.
The group has been offered a route which begins at city council headquarters, in Welford Place, and includes Pocklington's Walk, Horsefair Street and Charles Street.
Sir Peter defended his handling of the protests and said he was acting on police advice. The council still has time to apply for a ban on marches, he confirmed.
He said: "The fact is that over the past two weeks I have met community leaders, faith groups and businesses who have been almost unanimous in saying they do not want us to seek a ban on the march.
"They were concerned there would be a repeat of the violence we saw in October 2010 and have encouraged us to do all we can to minimise disruption in the city centre on Saturday.
"The advice we have had from police is they are confident they can contain the march.
"On the last occasion, when they were banned from marching and held a static protest, the city centre was effectively closed for 24 hours.
"We have learned lessons from that and do not want to see a repeat of that violence."
Leicester Unite Against Fascism members will decide shortly if they are happy to stick to the route given to them by police.
However, they are unhappy with the route given to the EDL.
Jackie Lewis, chairwoman of the group, said: "We are disappointed the council and the police have allowed the English Defence League a route through the symbolic heart of the city centre.
"This area belongs to the people of Leicester, not the English Defence League which is, largely, busing people in from outside the area."

“The march passed without any major incidents, therefore, the decision was correct to permit both groups to march. Personally, I feel that this is because of the wonderful policing tactics and the overwhelming spirit and desire portrayed by the local people of Leicester.
Hopefully, this delivers a strong message to any party or organisation that this great city of Leicester will not be divided. Nevertheless, the continuous squabble and debates regarding the EDL is simply pointless. In a strange manner, it is as if they have "scored a goal", because we allow them to have constant coverage. They came, they marched, they got bored and they left. It was an itch in the small of the back, however, we satisfied ourselves through scratching and we move on. Councillor Willmott is causing unnecessary arguments. I appreciate and respect his stance but surely, this country and city has more demanding and pressing matters.
Overall, the community of Leicester is diverse, we have citizens of different ethnic backgrounds, our beliefs in God differ, we vary in colour, our homely lives are not conducted in a uniformed manner, nonetheless, we are unified and depict solidarity through our ability to respect, honour, value and show consideration to each and every individual. We have our disagreements but let us persevere and allow our exemplary character shine through. Come what may, the people of Leicester stand firm together.”

“@RuralOutBack: You said, 'So Ross Willmott marched with the UAF. SergeForward has this not damaged any credibility this group...'
What are you asking me for??? I'm not anything to do with UAF, and neither they nor Ross Willmott or any politician have any credibility with me. So basically, what are you on about?”

“The only thing that should be banned is 'idiot of the highest order' Ross Wilmott, he typifies the far left ideology of "we dont agree with it so ban it", freedoms of choice are just bywords to these people, they are full (as Ross Wilmott most certainly is) of bloated self importance and a worrying need to be noticed, i myself, do not entirely agree with either the far left ideologies of the UAF OR the far right rubbish of the EDL...BUT...i DO agree with snippets of each and i do try to understand both sides of this argument, and when i arrive at an opinion with which i am comfortable i will have done so without listening to the brainwashing dogma of buffoons like Ross Willmott and his ilk who would like me to sit quietly in a darkened room whilst he makes my decisions for me, and this is also something the Leic Mercury could learn from as well, Your reporting on this demo has been appallingly one sided in favour of the far left attitudes whose opinions you most obviously favour whilst rubbishing the few lines that you have given to the far right but, surely, it's obvious is'nt it? that by printing the rubbish that BOTH SIDES clearly spout will enable the public (remember us?) to make their own informed decision as to which side of the argument (if any) they want to support?, IF it came to it, to be honest i would'nt soil a voting paper for either of them, but that would be MY decision, without influence!, i don't for a moment suppose that everyone will agree with me, but, whatever their opinion is, (especially) Ross Willmott and the LM, you must respect that it is just that, THEIR OPINION!!! and they should be free to make it without any interference or favour from you!”

“@Mohammned86. Your quote "don't be like sheep following the herd" does come across as pretty rich coming from a culture which indoctrinates children from a very early age in the ways of Islam. I have no axe to grind with you personally but, with respect, why should we seek knowledge about a religion we are simply not interested in? To some of us most faiths seem equally unnecessary but to pursue knowledge about one which is so strict that even the food you eat has to be halal, well...”

“So Ross Willmott marched with the UAF. SergeForward has this not damaged any credibility this group has and has it not brought Willmott into disripute as he has signed up to the equality standards when he became a councillor?”

“@ THobbes,
The entire far left are now reduced to spurious claims, feeble attempts at stirring in-fighting and name calling as they have ran out of any valid argument at all. The majority voice and numbers are of advocacy of the English. We are many they are few and our time of common sense, freedom and democracy is coming.
THobbes Epic fail.”

“The City Mayor writes: "faith groups - - - have been almost unanimous in saying they do not want us to seek a ban on the march". In another article we read "The Leicester Council of Faiths has revealed it wrote to the police recommending that the EDL march be banned" Where, and what, is the truth?”
