Salvation Army bands used to be a familiar sight in many high streets and not just at Christmas.

Dr Helen Boynton, of Oadby, has written to say: "On the radio this morning, I was very interested to hear the Bristol Salvation Army band playing the hymn How Great Thou Art.

"It took me back to my childhood when the Salvation Army band used to play every Sunday, and at Christmas, on the corner of Ashleigh Road, where we lived, and Fosse Road South.

"I wonder if your readers remember this and ask, do they come out to play still? I would be delighted to know."
