Two men have been arrested following a crash which killed one driver and left another in hospital.

The collision happened at about 6.45am yesterday, on the A46, close to Wanlip.

An Audi TT, a Volkswagon van and a tractor collided on the northbound carriageway, scattering debris for more than 100 yards in all directions.

The driver of the Audi was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the van was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary by paramedics, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening and he was due to be released last night.

Information about how the collision happened was under investigation yesterday.

Police closed the road between the Hobby Horse and Wanlip roundabouts.

The closure resulted in huge tailbacks during the morning rush-hour.

Police arrested two men, aged 21 and 24, in connection with the incident.

They have since been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

An eyewitness said: "It looked horrific, it's one of the worst crashes I've seen. The black car was completely wrecked.

"Both the back wheels of the tractor's trailer had come off and were thrown about 100 yards down the road.

"The traffic was awful, too. The queues stretched back miles."

The van driver, from heating installation firm Indtherm, based in Dudley, in the West Midlands, was working in the area.

A spokesman for the company said: "We have had some contact with him, but we're not sure of all the details surrounding the crash, so we can't say too much, but we wish him a full recovery."

Both carriageways remained closed throughout the day as crash investigators studied the scene to determine the cause of the collision.

Detective Constable Rob Lapworth, who was at the scene of the collision, said: "We would like to thank motorists for their patience during the investigations."

Fire crews from Syston and Leicester were called to the scene at about 6.50am.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is being asked to call police on 101.
