A call has gone out for charities, groups and individuals to bid for a share of £5,500 collected over Christmas.

Every Christmas, Melton firefighters hold their Trumpton tour of the town and villages in a Land Rover converted to look like the fire engine from the 1960s children's TV show.

Now, firefighters on the charity's committee are appealing for people to write to them for a share of the money.

Retained firefighter Ken Clark, committee secretary, said: "Once again the public in Melton and the surrounding area have dug deep, even at a time of recession.

"The amount raised this year is slightly up on last year.

"We now need people to write to us telling us why they deserve some of the money and what it would be spent on.

"We need them to include a name, address and telephone number and they need to be from this area."

A presentation evening to hand over cash or an item needed will be held in March.
