Do we need our commissioner?
It's a sure cert that if a Labour Government had proposed the farce of police and crime commissioners, the Tories would have damned it as a waste of time and money.
Candidates are almost all party political hacks and thus tied to party dogma. Now isn't that a surprise? There's little hope, I'm afraid, that no-one elected (on a projected 18% turnout) will act as did Thomas a Becket when Henry II made him Archbishop of Canterbury and defy the King's demands!

While I doubt not the personal qualities of the candidates, I reckon the voters will see them in the same light as the hapless Police Commissioner of Batman's Gotham City.
Will I vote? Would it make any difference? For once, I simply don't know.

“bapcav, As you obviously enjoy generalising about anyone or anything that in anyway gets up your nose, let me generalise. I bet you get most of your info. from the Daily Mail.
My mates will be in stitches when they read your comments about me saluting and yes sir, yes sir, three bags fulling it. 'cause you don't know anything about me and because I've got up your nose, as obviously the Northants Police have, I'm some sort of establishment lacky or does that actually apply to anyone who disagrees with you.”

“Lollaw :
The French have a word for people like you - "conditione."
In other words, if it wears a peaked cap, salute it.
As well as my own case, which was not a "spat," but a disgrace which took 18 months of hard work to clear up for the benefit of law-abiding European motorists, I could point to Hillsborough and the Tomlinson case as just two items which have brought international disgrace on Britain.
As for having a "pig for an avitar," I have no idea what you are talking about.
So just keep on saying "yes sir, yes sir, three bags full sir" and corrupt officials will keep on getting away with things.”

“No, I'm not a Police Officer, far to long in the tooth.
I just get fed up with people like you who have had a spat with an organisation whether social services, teachers, civil servants or whoever, generalising about the honest or integrity of people who in the main are trying to do as good a job as they possibly can. Often under very difficult circumstances.
And by the way, read the post, I didn't say you had been speeding. I just wondered if that was the reason for your somewhat jaundiced view of the Northampton Police.
As far as being 'above the law', where does that comment come from, so I obviously do not need lessons in integrity from someone commenting about the Police who has a pig as an avitar.”

“Lollaw .
My Spanish car was "impounded" by the Northamptonshire police, who were working a scam by deliberately misinterpreting European Directive 83/182 to target law-abiding foreign motorists.
I challenged their actions, which resulted in the European Commission ordering them to cease abusing European Law.
An inspector, in order to cover up the actions of his constable, made false accusations against me, and the Acting Chief Constable made inaccurate statements both of Law and Fact.
For this she was reprimanded by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, as was the Northamptonshire Police Authority.
Therefore your cheap remark suggesting that I had been speeding was libellous.
If you have any integrity at all, you will apologise.
Or are you a police officer and therefore feel that you are above the Law ?”

“Hillsborough shows that we desperately need independent oversight of a police force, which I know from my own experience in Northamptonshire, is rotten to the core and will do anything to cover up wrongdoing.
I would rather have a political agenda than the current criminal agenda.”

“My views on this matter are well known through these columns. I am totally opposed to this forthcoming political control of the police and I am utterly surprised that it is a Conservative initiative.
As I have said many times before, politics has no place in the policing of the UK. The police have always been independent of politics and should remain so.
Hitherto police forces have been overseen by police authorities, which are comprised of a panel of people from all walks of life, from all the political parties and none and also a contingent from the bench of magistrates. This has been a tried and tested system for decades, and has worked well and had the confidence of the general public.
Whoever is elected to the post of PCC wil inevitably have their own political agenda, and will undoubtedly either result in an unholy alliance with the Chief Constable, or a continuing rift between the two, which will in some cases lead to the resignation of senior police officers and the PCC getting the CC of his or her choice.
It is a thoroughly bad idea and will fundamentally alter the ethos of independence of our police, and politicise policing to its detriment.”

“Do we need our commissioner?
Simple answer..........No!”
