Car park's 'doggers' set to be locked out

Managers of a beauty spot are to take action against joyriders and "doggers" using a car park for racing and sex sessions.

Trustees of Bradgate Park said both activities became an increasing problem during the summer months at the Old John car park.

Now fences and gates which can be locked at dusk are to be installed.

Michael Harrison, land agent and surveyor to Bradgate Park Trust, said: "At dusk and after dark, there have been undesirable and unsuitable activities in the car park that we want to curb.

"We are going to place fencing within the car park which will enable us to close sections off at dusk and therefore exclude people from some of the more secluded areas.

"This way, we hope we can cut down on these undesirable activities. It will mean people cannot hide away and it cuts down on the opportunities to joyride around the car park.

"It has been an increasing problem for us over the summer so we want to take action."

The Old John car park is not alone in being used by people wanting to engage in "dogging", where strangers take part in sexual activity outdoors. The site is featured on a number of websites, along with other places around the county, including sites in Melton, Shenton and Sharnford.

Groby Pool was blighted by the problem for many years. Trees have been thinned, warning signs posted and regular police and council checks now take place there.

A police spokesman said the Old John car park was patrolled and officers were in regular contact with park wardens.

He said: "While we are aware of reports of inappropriate and anti-social behaviour at Bradgate Park, we are not aware of a significant increase in these incidents.

"Officers are in regular contact with Bradgate Park wardens.

"Officers also conduct increased patrols in the area at different times of the year."
