City news: Edworthy targets a fourth promotion after new deal

Marc Edworthy has signed a new deal to the end of the season with the belief he can grab a fourth promotion with Leicester City.

The experienced right-back knows what it takes to go up a division, albeit from the Championship to the Premiership, but the principle is the same – keep winning and handle the pressure.

Edworthy, who has never been on a losing side for City, winning five games and drawing one, said: "When I was at Norwich we were top on New Year's Day and we went up. I also got promotion at Crystal Palace and Derby and I can see similarities here.

"Back then, like we are now, we were the team to beat, up there to be shot at and that doesn't change."

Edworthy found himself in limbo after being released by Derby last summer and yesterday's signing of extended terms came as a big boost for him and testament to his own hard work.

He said: "It is a funny position when you are out of contract. I kept myself fit but it is a lot better to be training with other players as part of a squad.

"It is frustrating training on your own. I initially spent a trial period then got a short contract, had a couple of injuries, but got into the side and it went very well.

"This a great place to be at the moment. The manager is building up a good blend of youth and experience and now he has brought me in to add to that experience.

"We have had a fantastic start to the season and to be where we are in January is great. Now we just have to look forward to carrying it through. We can't get too carried away but we will try to see it through."

City manager Nigel Pearson said: "Marc has an excellent attitude and I am pleased he has agreed to extend his stay."

Edworthy's signing comes a day after veteran defender Chris Powell landed a similar deal until the end of the season so City are hoping for a "hat-trick" by turning their attention to negotiating midfielder Mark Davies's loan from Wolves, hopefully also to the end of the season.

MK Dons were thwarted by the weather last night in their attempt to take over the top spot from City in League One. Their match at Peterborough was called off at because of a frozen pitch.
